March 10, 2011
CALL MEETING TO ORDER: President Elaine Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. There were 28 members present and no guests.
MINUTES: There was one correction to the minutes of the February 10, 2011, meeting: the National Quilt Day quilt-in at the Hot Springs Library will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 19, 2011. Delores Hagman moved to approve the minutes as corrected, and Pearl Risinger seconded the motion. No further discussion. Unanimous approval.
TREASURER: Laurna Nelson read the Treasurer’s report. The current balance is $4,622.27. Nancy Cuckler moved to approve the report as read, and Margaret Ellen Bartolome seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval. Final membership dues were collected, and Laurna will have a new membership list prepared for the April meeting.
CORRESPONDENCE: Elaine Anderson read a January 22, 2011, letter from Larry Wilcox, Superintendent of the SD State Veterans’ Home, thanking the Guild for its contribution of $800.
OTHER OFFICER REPORTS:
VP: Quilts to be hung in April to be provided by Sandy, Sheryl and Jan.
Librarian: Carolyn is sending in her book order on March 11, 2011.
Historian: No report.
Program: Beth announced that Nuts and Bolts, the fabric/quilt shop in Edgemont, will present the program at the April meeting. There are no firm plans yet for classes.
On March 4, a group of 6 ladies visited the quilt display “Structure and Improvisation” at the Nicholaysen Museum in Casper, WY. They also visited a quilt display at the National Historic Trails museum there, a display that included old quilts and some made by a professor of textiles at Casper College.
The last block drawing under the current system occurred. Beth asked that people think about what they’d like to do next—nothing, same system, each person make her own blocks, etc.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Inventory: Pat Cerney and Julie completed the inventory of Quilt Guild assets held at the State Home. A copy of the inventory will go to the State Home. Thank you, ladies!
Charity Quilts: Ginny and Stacey have been compiling a list of local charities who can use quilts. WEAVE, the battered women’s shelter in Custer, could be added to the list. They have need for children’s and adult quilts. Nancy Cuckler volunteered to get any donated quilts delivered to WEAVE.
Joyce Safris, whose house trailer burned last week, will receive a quilt when her move to Brookside is accomplished.
OLD BUSINESS:
Reminder: National Quilting Day will be celebrated here in Hot Springs at the library on March 19th, with a quilt-in from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Beth, Karen and Elaine hung 18 quilts at the library already, and the library staff has set out books about quilting and quilt patterns. Everyone come and bring something to work on on the 19th.
Block drawings: Please have blocks completed for the next meeting (or at the maximum within 3 months of the drawing), so recipients have time to put their pieces together prior to Christmas in the Hills.
Ann and Brian are adamant that there will be a summer quilt show somewhere in Hot Springs.
Nametags and instructions are on the back table.
NEW BUSINESS:
Jan’s niece Rosie Elmore, a former member of the Guild, has colon cancer and has started chemo. Members of the Guild have been making blocks for a quilt for her. Please refer to e-mail Karen Meston sent out March 8th. Blocks need to be done by March 28th and can be delivered to Heartsong.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Pearl found a YouTube video about a blind lady in Texas who learned to quilt. The site is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lfaSmDxVZQ.
2. The Chadron Quilt Festival is April 15-17th at the Assumption Arena. $4.00 admission, vendors, demonstrations, food, raffle. The website is www.chadronfestivalofquilts.com.
3. Black Hills Quilt Guild show registration forms are available now on their website. Registration must be submitted by May 3rd. The show is June 10th through 12th. Quilt turn in June 8th.
4. April 1st through April 16th: Black Hills shop hop.
5. Julie announced intermediate quilting classes at Heartsong on Thursday March 17th, 31st, and April 7th OR Saturday March 19th, April 2nd and 16th. The project will be an Irish chain with a star. Heartsong will be holding a beginning machine quilting class on March 24th. Contact the shop for more information.
6. Healing Hearts project for victims of earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. Instructions for quilt blocks (cream fabric with an appliquéd heart, 7-inch unfinished) and further information at www.kiwiquilts.co.nz. Mary Sue will mail any quilt blocks finished by the Guild meeting on May 12th.
NEXT BUSINESS MEETING: April 14, 2011, at 7:00 p.m., with brown bag social beginning at 5:00 p.m.
NEXT WORKDAY: April 2, 2011, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with noon potluck. Projects: charity quilts, Rosie’s quilt, and your own Christmas in the Hills quilts.

Lots of possibilities; work on your blocks for Christmas in the Hills, your Harvest Block for the Fair, your tea set, charity quilts and Rosie’s quilt. Remember to bring a potluck dish to share.
Tips: When measuring for your quilt backing,add an extra 10 inches. The extra piece is just the right size to make a matching sleeve. Or make the sleeve from swatches of all the fabrics you’ve used on the surface of the quilt. If a repair is needed later, you’ll have the original fabrics available.

March 19th is National Quilting Day. The Guild will have a "quilt-in" at the Hot Springs Library from 10-2 pm. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: President Elaine Anderson called the meeting to order at 6:59 PM. There were 31 members present.
NEW MEMBER: Welcome New Member Brenda Moore.
MINUTES: Laurna made a motion to accept the minutes from the January 13, 2011 meeting and Pat Scheltens seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
TREASURER: Laurna presented the financial report. The current balance is $4482.27. Income this month was $390.00 from 2011 dues. Expenses Paid were $893.59: State Veterans Home $800.00, 2011 Raffle Quilt supplies $48.72, Totes for hanging sheets for quilts $16.07, South Dakota Quilters Guild Dues $20.00 and Postage Stamps $8.80. A motion was made by Ginny and seconded by Deloris Hagman to approve the financial report as written. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
OTHER OFFICER REPORTS:
VP: Ginny passed around the signup sheet for quilts to be hung in 2011. She needed three quilts for each month.

Librarian: There were two magazines added and AQS Magazine order passed around.

Beth announced that Saturday March 5, 2011 is the next workday and it will be a work on your own day.
Beth mentioned that March 19 is National Quilting Day and the Library will be hosting a Quilt In. They would like quilts to Display March 8-March 22, Set up will be March 8th. A sign up list was sent around.
Beth also announced that “The Structure and Improvisation” is on display at Casper, Wyoming and includes Nancy Crow, Rosalie Dace, Michael James and Paula Nadelsterm. It will be in Casper January 21- May 1.
Beth said she is able to set up a date if enough interest is generated for a road trip, for either Friday March 4 or Friday April 1st. She would be sending a signup sheet around.
Pat announced that the Round Robin challenge for 2011 has been started and reminded us that the next round is a minimum 3” Border and must be more than just a strip of fabric. It must include a design or be pieced.

INVENTORY: Julie stated that she and Pat C. are almost completed with the inventory. They are in need of knowing what everybody has of the Guilds; at their homes, in storage or use to finish up.
CHARITY QUILTS: Ginny sent a list around to be added to, of any places or persons you can think of to add to the list of possible “in need Recipients”.
OLD BUSINESS: Elaine reminded the guild that Past Block Drawing Blocks owed to others from the last two years are due to their recipients by next month (March), which will give everybody time to get their quilts made for Display at “Christmas in the Hills”.
NEW BUSINESS: Elaine had received a call from Amy Alan in need of wanting someone to make her 2 Memory Quilts in Wall hanging sizes; she has many Ties, T-shirts and caps to be used. She may be contacted at 890-1118 or 745-1890.
2012 Raffle Quilt: The 2012 Raffle Quilt is almost done. Beth showed it during the meeting, and the borders are cut and lines drawn for the appliqué. Karen is cutting the bias.
Summer Show: Elaine asked if the Members would be interested in a Quilt Show this summer. A motion was made by Ann and seconded by Laurna to have Brian and Ann investigate the possibility of having a Summer Quilt Show. All in favor, Motion carried.
Dues: Dues are $15.00 for the year and are due now.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Fabric for the taking: Misc. fabrics on table for whomever to take, anything left will be stripped and used in dog beds.
Announcements from Members:
1. Judy Gifford announced that she is now starting to Quilt for Hire. She is offering at this time Edge to Edge quilting and Pantograph quilting, she may be reached at her email bjgifford5@live.com or home 605-787-4917.
2. Karen Meston announced that the State Home Medicaid Review passed with flying colors. Karen also stated that funding for the New State Home in Hot Spring passed the House.

Tips: Remove fabric or quilts from the dryer before they are completely dry. Fabric is easier to iron when the wrinkles haven’t been hard set by the heat, and slightly damp quilts can be laid out and squared up on the floor. There’s also less wear on the finish of the materials.

Casper Trip:
We plan to travel on March 4 (snow date April 1), leaving United Churches parking lot at 7 am. We currently have 2 cars going. We should arrive at the Nic in Casper around 10-10:30. That gives us 3/4 to 1 hour to get settled and look around. The curator Lisa, has been asked to give us a short presentation about the exhibit around 11:15.
We will order sandwiches from Grant Street and partake of the Nic at Noon program. We then have some more time to return to the exhibit, or other exhibits, the gift shop or... We plan to depart Casper 4ish to be back in Hot Springs 7ish...

We will order sandwiches from Grant Street and partake of the Nic at Noon program. We then have some more time to return to the exhibit, or other exhibits, the gift shop or... We plan to depart Casper 4ish to be back in Hot Springs 7ish...

MINNEKAHTA QUILTERS GUILD MINUTES
January 13, 2011
CALL MEETING TO ORDER: President Elaine Anderson called the meeting to order at 7 PM. There were 29 members present. Three guests were introduced: Sheri Coleman, Jean Conley, and Brandon Gifford.
STATE HOME PRESENTATION: On behalf of the guild, Elaine presented $800.00 to State Home Director of Operations, Randy Meyers. Elaine thanked the State home for the use of their space. Randy informed the group that the donation is used for activities for the residents.
MINUTES: Julie made a motion to accept the minutes from the December 9, 2010 meeting and Sandy seconded the motion. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
TREASURER: Laurna presented the financial report. The current balance is $4985.86. Income this month was $80.00 from from 2011 dues and $50.00 Donation to Charity Quilts. A motion was made by Karen and seconded by Deloris Hagman to approve the financial report as written. No discussion. Unanimous approval.
OTHER OFFICER REPORTS: VP: Ginny passed around the sign up sheet for quilts to be hung in 2011. She needs three quilts for each month.
Librarian: There was no librarian’s report.
Historian: There was no historian’s report.
Program:
Beth announced that Saturday, February 5th is the next workday and she will be showing how to make the Scrappy Heart Quilt and she handed out the fabric requirements list for it.
Beth also made up and handed out this years Calendar Bookmarks. Beth reminded that the 2011 Centennial Block Harvest are to be 14 1/2" in size with the center measuring 12".
Pat mentioned that the Round Robin challenge for 2011 sign up sheet and instructions were being passed around. Pat showed the finished center block which needs to be completed by the February meeting. At that time groups will be assigned.
Beth also handed out a reminder for Show and Tell as follows:
We are going to continue 2010's practice of "awarding" year end prizes based upon the number of items you present in the "Show" portion of Show and Tell. So just a friendly reminder: Items to be shown should either be finished- with sleeve and label attached- OR-
items that are leaving your hands. By this we mean blocks going to another quilter, an item nearly finished but being given away before the next meeting, blocks being sent to a competition... The "Tell" segment is for sharing information about anything you would like to share. This is where you could "tell" us about the neat website with free patterns; and, if you show an example of this, the item should reappear when it is finished. Again, we will take our numbers from the Show and Tell list printed in the Minutes so be sure to list your items.
COMMITTEE REPORTS: CITH: Thanks are given to Julie, Cheryl and Laurna for all their hard work.
Audit Report: Karen, Stacy and Deloris reported that the Audit had been done and signed off except for Stacy, and Stacy would be signing it off at the conclusion of tonight’s meeting.
OLD BUSINESS: 2011 Budget was accepted and approved. Motion by Pat and seconded by Helen, unanimous.
NEW BUSINESS: Inventory: Elaine asked for volunteers to take inventory and assign values to the Guilds Possessions. Pat and Julie volunteered.
Chairman for committee for Charity Quilts: Elaine asked for volunteers to set up workdays and find out where the need is for Charity Quilts. Stacy and Ginny volunteered.
Dues: Dues are $15.00 for the year and are due now.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Marilyn Rowley announced that Brian Powers has an article in the Fabric Trends Magazine.
2. Elaine announced that the S.D. Quilters Guild Newsletter was received and it will be in the Library.
NEXT BUSINESS MEETING: The next business meeting is February 10, 2011 at 7 PM. Plan to come early (5 PM) for brown bag social.
NEXT WORKDAY: The next workday is February 5, 2011 at 9 AM. Don’t forget a potluck item. Beth will be teaching how to do the Scrappy Heart Quilt or just come and work on your own with us.

PROGRAM: Sandy showed how to Sew curves, working in the seams. She showed many different samples of different types of curves and brought additional information in magazines.

Beth will be teaching how to do the Scrappy Heart Quilt (see supply list in this newsletter) or you may bring a project of your own to work on. Remember to bring a potluck dish to share.
Tips: When sewing on the binding of a quilt. Make your binding, roll it up (making sure the end is out that you will stitch down 1st) and put it in a large zip-lock bag. Seal the bag up leaving the opening just big enough for the binding to flow through. Then as you move the quilt or if it falls your binding does not get tangled up.
A note from the President:
As you may remember we are planning to have a special display of “Block Drawing” quilts at the 2011 Christmas in the Hills show. In order that recipients have adequate time to complete these quilts we have set a deadline of the March meeting for blocks to be completed. If you owe a block for any drawing in 2009 or 2010 please have it completed for the recipient by then. We are looking forward to seeing all these wonderful quilts on display!
